*Disclaimer: At this time, NJ Ticks 4 Science! tests only two tick species—the blacklegged (deer) tick (Ixodes scapularis) and Gulf Coast tick (Amblyomma maculatum)—because these are the species in New Jersey most relevant to human health.
While lone star ticks are linked to red meat allergy we
*Blacklegged ticks are tested for Borrelia burgdorferi (Lyme bacteria), Borrelia miyamotoi, Babesia microti, and Anaplasma phagocytophilum. Gulf Coast ticks are tested for Rickettsia parkeri. Due to funding constraints and the fact that our testing over the past three years has only shown an infection rate of approximately of 2%, we can no longer provide individual tests of lone star ticks for Ehrlichia chaffeensis and Ehrlichia ewingii. We are focusing on priority tests to keep results available at no cost. Specifically, we are adding testing of Gulf Coast ticks, a species expanding into NJ, for Tidewater spotted fever bacteria—if you’d like to support the program, please consider making a donation.
